Direct current - a turn without a change?
"We need a turn without change" – this is how Guido Ege, Head of Product Management and Product Development at U.I. Lapp GmbH, puts it when it comes to the topic of direct current. Especially when the source of electricity comes from renewable energies such as photovoltaics or wind power, it becomes clear what he means by this statement. After all, these generate direct current (DC), which first has to be converted into alternating current (AC) by means of inverters - and since many devices and drives only run on direct current, it has to be converted again. This results in enormous conversion losses. It is therefore clear that "the long-term phase-out of fossil energy sources can only be made efficient if we consistently switch more and more to direct current and avoid conversion losses". LAPP recognized this at an early stage and has therefore been involved in this topic for many years - for example in the DC industry research project, together with the Technical University of Illmenau.
