Additive Manufacturing in Industrial Production

Language: ENG

Additive manufacturing is widely used and established in the industry for prototyping, functional safeguarding, as well as customization and production on a small scale.

To enable additive manufacturing for use in industrial applications of mid- and large-scale production, and to widen the application in the already established fields, there are challenges and hurdles to overcome. These challenges lie mostly with the technology, for example, in the cost efficiency against conventional production technologies but also along the process chain and in the mindset of organizations. This presentation will address these challenges, show the potential of additive manufacturing in the automotive industry from BMW Group’s point of view, and lead to possible approaches and necessary developments, for example, for machine manufacturers to overcome the challenges and reach the tipping point for the full industrial use. The session will also give insights into how the BMW Group as an organization handles the challenges and how the BMW Group wants to bring additive manufacturing to industrial scale production through clear specifications of requirements as well as processes and development targets. Through this proceeding, the BMW Group wants to enable the wider industrial use of additive manufacturing through clear targets for necessary developments as well as initiate discussions and collaborations with partners to reach these targets.
